How to integrate a Bluetooth module into a Device - Nine Steps for a Successful Project

1. Architecture of my device - how Bluetooth is run

The first matter to consider when starting the design process of a Bluetooth module into a system is to define how Bluetooth wireless technology will be implemented. Basically you have two options:

a) Run the Bluetooth stack 100% in the module or
b) Run the Bluetooth upper layer stack in your host-processor (Host Command Interface, HCI).

Once you have set this, you can choose the most suitable product from Bluegiga; WT11, WT12 and WT32 Bluetooth modules can host the stack 100%, but also support HCI Split. Bluegiga's WT21 Bluetooth module supports only HCI mode and offers a cost optimized solution.

2. How my device is used - select the Bluetooth profiles

You need to consider how your device will be used. In practice this means that you need to set and define the Bluetooth profile you will utilize. If your application sample needs to have a wireless serial connection to another device, then you are using Serial Port Profile (SPP). This profile definition is very important and will set the Bluetooth features of your device. This feature will be marketed and mentioned in your product literatures in the future. Bluegiga recommends you to contact us for free support and discuss with our experts the most suitable and efficient profile for your needs.

3. Where to place the Bluetooth module in my device  - put it on the right "corner"

The location of the Bluetooth module in your device needs careful consideration. Bluetooth is radio technology and possible interferences and performance is due to the environment and the location of the module in your device's printed circuit board. In general, the Bluetooth module should be placed in your device so that there aren't any other components close by the Bluetooth module's antenna and the module is not located under your device's other electronics. Bluegiga offers design reviews where our experts validate your design. This service will make sure your product performance will be the most optimal.

4. When executing the actual design - check the reference designs

Once you are starting the actual implementation (schematics and PCB), it is good to check and follow Bluegiga's reference designs, datasheets and software manuals. You can download these example designs from Bluegiga's online support: techforum.bluegiga.com

5. Testing your prototypes - make sure you can get the most out of Bluetooth wireless technology

Bluegiga offers a variety of simple tools for you to test the range of your device, bit rates etc. You can download the iWRAP user guide and effective testing software from techforum.bluegiga.com

6. Join The Bluetooth Special Interest Group - Bluetooth SIG

As a member of The Bluetooth Special Interest Group you can make sure you will have all the relevant information in hand for following Bluetooth brand guidelines as well as the official authorization to use Bluetooth logos in your general marketing materials. Becoming a member of The Bluetooth SIG does not cost you anything - it just takes a few minutes to sign up.

7. List your product to Bluetooth.com - Have your products on the Qualified Bluetooth list

With Bluegiga's products you can quickly make mandatory end-product listing of your devices that have Bluetooth features. Unlike with Bluetooth chipsets and partially certified modules, with Bluegiga's products you can make end-product listing in a few minutes without any costs. To qualified product pages.

8. Gather the needed country approvals - get your product FCC, CE Compliant

You can use Bluegiga product's FCC and CE (and several other country approvals) in your own product qualification stickers and documents. You can get the product qualification numbers from techforum.bluegiga.com or by contacting Bluegiga Support, support@bluegiga.com.

9. Prepare your product marketing material and manuals

After you have done steps 6-8, you will have a clear understanding of how to emphasize Bluetooth functionality in your product literature. Keep in mind that there are a lot of free marketing materials available from Bluetooth SIG and Bluegiga for increasing your brand image with Bluetooth wireless technology.
