Wireless Solution Improves Efficiency, Safety and Convenience for Metering Technicians
Probe-TEC is a leading manufacturer of wireless communication devices for the electric utility industry. Probe-TEC developed the OptoWave, a wireless optical probe which is the first wireless probe for reading and programming electricity meters. It is a convenient and robust device with a built-in radio and microcontroller.
Electric meter technicians are responsible for reading, programming, and debugging solid state electricity meters. Electric meters are typically located outdoors and in other harsh environments. So using a laptop or handheld computer to communicate with the meters often exposes the technicians and the computers to that environment. Probe-TEC's innovative solution replaces the long communications cable with a wireless link allowing the technician to work from the comfort and safety of the service vehicle.
Meter technicians are in the field 8 hours a day traveling from one site to another. So Probe-TEC needed a wireless solution that could deliver an 8-hour-day with power to spare. In addition, the conditions at sites, such as electrical substations, can be harsh both in terms of weather and RF noise.
