Bluegiga Introduces Mobile Phone Recognition Software for the Access Server Product Family

19.12.2006

Press Release, Tuesday, 19 December 2006

BLUEGIGA INTRODUCES MOBILE PHONE REGOGNITION SOFTWARE FOR THE ACCESS SERVER PRODUCT FAMILY

Bluegiga introduces Bluetooth® device recognition technology into it’s access servers enabling local marketing applications to identify the model of Bluetooth enabled devices such as mobile phones, and to push them tailored content.

Espoo, Finland, 19 December 2006 -
Bluegiga’s successful access server product platform receives a new exiting feature for local marketing applications as OBEXSender software will be capable of recognizing the type of Bluetooth enabled devices. This has been the biggest challenge in local marketing applications since there is a huge variety of Bluetooth enabled devices on the market with different features like screens size and operating system. This has been a challenge, since for the best user experience the content should be tailored to each Bluetooth enabled device to match its capabilities.

Bluegiga’s Bluetooth device recognition is based on the standard Bluetooth Device Identification information but also a Bluegiga proprietary BluID checksum. This offers two ways to identify a Bluetooth enabled device and making the device recognition very reliable. The device recognition feature will be integrated into Bluegiga’s OBEXsender application and will also be easily customizable by the customer.

“I’m very exited about the Bluetooth device recognition, since it offers Bluegiga’s local marketing customers a totally new level of performance as they can offer device dependent content to their customers improving the user experience and service quality. This also once again shows that Bluegiga is able to offer it’s customers industry leading solutions.”
, comments Tom Nordman, Bluegiga’s VP of Sales and Marketing.

The new OBEXSender software with Bluetooth device recognition is now available via special request. General availability will be during Q1/2007.

Bluegiga's Class 1 Module Certified for Bluetooth 2.0+EDR Standard

04.04.2006

Press Release, April 4th, 2006

BLUEGIGA’S CLASS 1 ENHANCED DATA RATE MODULE CERTIFIED FOR BLUETOOTH 2.0 STANDARD

The latest addition to Bluegiga’s embedded Bluetooth product range, WT11 module offers the latest Bluetooth specification 2.0 features in a fully certified OEM solution.

Espoo, Finland and Embedded Systems Conference, San Jose, US - Bluegiga Technologies is proud to announce that its class 1 Bluetooth 2.0 Enhanced Data Rate (EDR – supporting speed up to 3Mbps) module, named WT11, recently gained Bluetooth end product certification status. WT11 is the first Bluetooth 2.0+EDR class 1 module, which is certified as an end product. End product status means that no additional Bluetooth certification is needed when using WT11.
WT11 module is a complete system that OEM’s can utilize without putting any effort for extremely time consuming and expensive RF and Bluetooth certifications. WT11 module integrates the latest CSR’s BC04 chipset, flash memory and antenna with all the needed components. WT11 module’s range in line of sight is up to 200 meters.

“This new WT11 module really differentiates from the competing solutions at the market with it‘s maximum certification level. Bluetooth certification system consists of several product classes where you can certify your products: Components, subsystems and end products. All other certification statuses than end product require at least a product listing to Bluetooth Special Interest Group. As WT11 is listed as a complete end product and OEM does not need to worry about Bluetooth certifications at all. Naturally we also have full CE and FCC certifications meaning that significant money and time savings with national authorities and certification houses is gained as well”, comments Mr. Tom Nordman, Vice President of Sales at Bluegiga Technologies.

The WT11 module has proven to be a very versatile Bluetooth class 1 module and we are happy to see it join forces with our 10 meter version WT12. The integration work is easy as ever with the integrated antenna not forgetting the option for U.FL connector. Combining this with the possibility to use an end product certified firmware makes it a very lucrative choice for many designs. Also, one shouldn't miss the intuitive and simple control interface offered in the iWRAP firmware which makes it totally unnecessary to integrate any 3rd party Bluetooth stack into the application.” says Mr. Teemu Vainio, Product Director at Bluegiga Technologies.

Two Finnish companies were chosen to the "We Are the World"-hall in Shanghai World Expo 2010

04.05.2010

The products and technologies of Finnish companies Ball-It Oy and Bluegiga Technologies Inc. will be presented at the Shanghai World Expo's "We Are the World" pavilion which introduces the future life and vision. The Expo's selection committee chose carefully to their self-built and supervised pavilion applications that can improve the quality of life in a changing environment for a Chinese family becoming international as a basis. Ball-It and Bluegiga are the only representatives from Scandinavia.

The unique technology of Ball-It's Blobo virtual game fascinated the selection committee, since the possibilities of the game are huge and only few of them are currently in use. It allows families to experience time together and play the game physically in the same room and via Internet with players regardless of their location. In all situations where the game was presented it was the most popular among the selectors by transforming the meeting rooms into game rooms where intense competition among couple running and hammer throw took place.

The selection committee was convinced with the possibilities of using Bluegiga's leading Bluetooth-technology in solving the increasing problems of the healthcare industry. Tele connection with the hospital and doctor combined with the standards of Bluetooth-technology enable patience monitoring and analyzing results without doctor's appointment. Also, it is possible to have a 24-hour monitoring which permits fulfilling the care needs of the elderly population with a win-win principle. For example, blood pressure and diabetes patients can live at home as long as possible; hence the resources of the society can be used for patients that need continuous physical treatment.

Michael Chiang, Senior Executive Producer from IGD World Expo China office was assigned by the Expo to produce the program for the "We Are the World" pavilion. With his colleague Lena Ng, he thanks both Finnish companies and their technologies that fit perfectly to the pavilion's philosophy of sustainable development, innovation and visionary. "We both were immediately sold by both companies and understood perfectly why the Expo's management wanted both Ball-It and Bluegiga Technologies Inc. as a part of the pavilion's future program" commented Michael Chiang.

Ari Siponmaa, CEO of investment company Aura Capital Oy that found and invested on both companies, thanks the exclusive opportunity to present extensively know-how of the two small and new, yet promising Finnish companies.

"I have to say big thank you to the Shanghai World Expo 2010 management for being so open-minded when they accepted to their "hall of future" small, near future promises as well. A place in the pavilion will definitely enhance the companies' expansion in China and naturally also bench mark them as technology leaders in their field worldwide. A big thank you for this opportunity also goes to gentlemen Yu Lie and Tapani Tuominen, a Finnish lawyer who has worked in China for decades, whose excellent connections made possible for us to connect with the higher level" comments Siponmaa.

Bluetooth Technology Chosen as Continua Health Alliance Standard

09.06.2009

Continua Health Alliance, the non-profit, open industry coalition of leading health care and technology companies, has selected Bluetooth low energy wireless technology as one of the two wireless technology standards to be included in the next version of the Continua Health Alliance Design Guidelines.

This announcement by Continua is the result of extensive time and efforts spent by the Bluetooth SIG to ensure Bluetooth technology will continue to be the wireless standard for health care, fitness and sports devices. No small feat, these sorts of changes in our industry are often driven outside of the public forum through the relationships that we have developed. Our members have built and continue to advance a technology that is the ubiquitous wireless standard for mobile device connectivity and our state-of-the-art testing tools and qualification program ensure Bluetooth technology is the effective choice for a wide range of industry devices and applications. This announcement is recognition of those efforts and of Bluetooth technology as the global standard for wireless connectivity.

The Continua radio selection process was conducted by members of the Continua Low Power Radio Sub-Team, the Continua Technical Working Group and the Continua Board of Directors. All teams were aided by experts from the technology and health care industries-at-large, as well as guided by research conducted by an independent third party analysis firm. After 10 months of extensive consideration of required power levels, cell phone ubiquity, required range, and anticipated market penetration, Continua arrived at just two technologies to optimally satisfy the required use cases.

Continuas selection of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology, pending finalization of the specification by the SIG, will enable monitoring of health and fitness levels with the use of low power mobile devices such as activity monitors and heart rate sensors. This development will drive the reach of Bluetooth technology far beyond the existing 20 million health and fitness Bluetooth devices in the marketplace today.

Continua selected two wireless technology standards to ensure that the next iterations of Continua Health Alliance Design Guidelines are targeted to support both mobile and fixed location devices. Continua selected ZigBee Health Care technology for fixed, low power sensors that can be networked in static environments. Unlike Bluetooth technology, which enables mobile applications as well as small, battery powered devices for a wide range of applications and environments, ZigBee will be used in fixed locations.

The low cost, power consumption, and small size of Bluetooth low energy technology will provide power efficient, short-range, wireless connectivity between mobile devices and small, battery powered devices such as watches, emergency pendants, and health and fitness sensors. With the selection of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology Continua members will now have a reliable solution to enable a wide range of mobile devices. Bluetooth technology will also serve to extend the current Continua standard for the Bluetooth Health Device Profile, which is the only wireless technology specification included in Continuas Version One Design Guidelines, announced in February 2009.

For more information about the selection, read the press release on Bluetooth.com.

Audio specialists cooperate with Bluegiga for wireless speaker development

11.01.2010

Audio design engineering companies APTX, Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, and Bluegiga Technologies have collaborated to produce an integrated module reference design and evaluation kit for speaker OEMs seeking to upgrade existing passive products to wireless active systems.

This module concept combines Class D amplification from Bang & Olufsen ICEpower A/S (Lyngby, Denmark), a wireless interface from Bluegiga Technologies Oy (Espoo, Finland), and audio coding software from APTX (Belfast, Northern Ireland).

The collaboration has produced an evaluation kit with proven hardware and firmware which can accelerated new product development and support the market shift to wireless and active loudspeaker systems.

"This is great news for speaker OEMs seeking to upscale their products from simple passives to cutting-edge wireless active technology," said Stephen Wray, VP Licensing of APTX. "ICEpower was one of the first audio companies to pioneer the industry transformation from analog to high-efficiency switching technologies. With this new modular solution, electronics OEMs can now retro-fit existing passive loudspeaker systems, provide Bluetooth wireless interoperability, and deliver really professional audio quality that’s indistinguishable from wired speaker systems. This new modular solution delivers a very impressive dynamic range of more than 92dB at CD sampling rates (16bit/44.1kHz)."

ICEpower has raised the power-efficiency of the amplifier and power supply from the 50 to 70 percent found in traditional analog designs, to 80 to 95 percent thanks to advance Class D techniques.

Bluegiga supplies the WT32 Bluetooth audio module which integrates a 2.4GHz radio, DSP, battery charger, stereo apt-X audio coding, and antenna. The WT32 offers full support for the latest 2.1 + EDR standard via Bluegiga iWRAP firmware.

Bang & Olufsen ICEpower was founded by Dr. Karsten Nielsen in a joint venture with Bang & Olufsen in 1999 based on the results of Dr. Nielsen’s PhD work at the Technical University of Denmark.

Bluegiga releases Bluetooth low energy product family

02.02.2011

Bluegiga's new Bluetooth low energy platform enables device manufacturers to integrate ultra-low power connectivity with incredible ease, opening the door to a rapidly growing market for low power wireless devices.

Espoo, February 2, 2011
-- Bluegiga Technologies launches its new Bluetooth low energy product family. Bluegiga's initial Bluetooth low energy products include the BLE112 Bluetooth low energy module and a BLED112 Bluetooth low energy USB dongle. Both products offer everything needed to build a Bluetooth low energy application, including Bluetooth low energy radio, Bluetooth low energy stack, micro controller, and development tools to embed customer applications within the products.

"I think Bluetooth low energy can become a game changer for the low power wireless connectivity market. It enables an entirely new set of innovative applications not feasible with current Bluetooth technology. Applications like health and fitness devices, proximity tags, remote control and sensing, and personal watches will now be able to take advantage of Bluetooth technology", comments Tom Nordman, Bluegiga's VP of sales and marketing.

The BLE112, Bluetooth low energy single mode module, is targeted for sensors and accessories requiring low power connectivity. The BLE112 is a complete, ready to integrate Bluetooth low energy OEM module with antenna, radio, Bluetooth stack and flexible hardware interfaces to connect sensors, displays, or other peripherals. Full customer applications can be embedded within the BLE112 module eliminating the need of an external microcontroller. The BLE112 can be powered by standard 3V coin cell batteries or two AAA batteries and in its lowest power sleep mode only consumes 400nA and can wake from sleep in a few hundred microseconds.

The BLED112 Bluetooth low energy USB dongle is well suited for personal computers or other legacy devices with a USB port that don't support the Bluetooth 4.0 standard. The BLED112 can operate as virtual COM port or USB HID device making it ideal for HID accessories like keyboards and mice as no driver is needed.

With the launch of our Bluetooth low energy product family, Bluegiga sets the standard by providing developers with flexible, easy to use, development tools to embed customer applications within the BLE112 and BLED112. BGScriptTM is a scripting language enabling rapid development of Bluetooth low energy applications that can reside within BLE112 or BLED112 memory, eliminating the need for a separate micro controller. Bluetooth 4.0 allows companies to develop manufacturer specific Bluetooth profiles and with our
BGProfile ToolkitTM developers can tailor the profiles to fit their specific application needs. For even more flexibility Bluegiga will also offer C-level APIs to its Bluetooth low energy stack allowing developers to use standard development tools to create highly customized Bluetooth low energy applications.

"Our Bluetooth low energy product family is a great fit for sensor and device manufacturers wishing to add ultra-low power connectivity to their devices. With the BLE112 and BLED112 we have really strived to create products that are unsurpassed in ease of use while still being powerful and highly flexible. And by the end of 2011 you are going to see a whole family of Bluetooth low energy products addressing a wide variety of applications and markets", says Mikko Savolainen Bluegiga's VP of Product Management.

About Bluetooth 4.0 technology

Bluetooth low energy is a new, open standard developed by the Bluetooth SIG. It's targeted to address the needs of new modern wireless applications such as ultra-low power consumption, fast connection times, reliability and security. Bluetooth low energy consumes 10-20 less power and is able to transmit data 50 times quicker than classical Bluetooth solutions.

Bluetooth low energy is designed for new emerging applications and markets such as: health and fitness, consumer medical, smart energy, industrial automation and security, but it still embraces the very same features we already know from the classical, well established Bluetoothtechnology: robustness and reliability, security, interoperability and global availability.

Bluetooth low energy devices come in two flavors:

1. Single-mode devices that only supportBluetoothlow energy and are optimized for low-power, low-cost and small size solutions,

2. Dual-mode devices that supportBluetoothlow energy and classical Bluetooth technologies and are interoperable with all the previously Bluetooth specification versions.

e-Reader development project with Helsinki Universities

14.10.2011

Bluegiga contributing to the development project of the world’s thinnest e-reader, leaded by Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in co-operation with Aalto University

The world’s thinnest e-reader tested in Vantaa

The prototype testing of a new e-reader was begun in Vantaa, Finland on 13 September. The electronic paper uses an extremely thin and low-power electronic e-reader to cover local news stories via the local digital TV network. The new e-reader has been developed in Finland.

The pilot project aims to determine how readers of print newspapers will respond to the thin and simple e-reader. The usability study, which is being carried out by Etnoteam Finland, will also collect feedback on the e-reader’s functionalities, data transfer and content concept.

The world’s thinnest e-reader

Families taking part in the study will use the extremely easy-to-use e-reader to access local news for a month. The Electria unit at the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences will be leading the project in cooperation with Aalto University. “The e-reader is designed to receive data only, which makes it extremely thin, energy efficient and cost-effective in terms of manufacturing costs,” says Technical Project Director Sampo Nurmentaus at Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The e-reader is equipped with a 9.7 inch e-paper display and is only 3.8 mm thin. The device’s battery life is one week with a single charge. Future versions of the device will be solar powered, making it ideal for readers who are off the grid for long stretches of time.

The electronic local newspaper will be downloaded to the e-reader via a digital TV signal at night or automatically during daytime hours if necessary. DNA, a Finnish wireless carrier, will be responsible for data transfer in the digital TV network via its own DVB-T2 antennae network. “DNA wants to study how modern digital TV networks can be used to transfer different types of content and media. We also want to see if TV networks can be used to provide services that are not as time critical as TV broadcasts during off-peak hours,” says Development Director Juhani Simpanen at DNA.

Sanoma News, the leading newspaper publisher in Finland, is taking part in the project in order to develop a data transfer platform in tune with the media company’s needs. The aim is to make the new device available to households free-of-charge. “The newspaper business is experiencing a major transition in terms of content generation and distribution. At the same time the importance of local news is growing continuously. Taking part in this project allows us to see if we can provide residents in the Greater Helsinki area with local news in a completely new way,” says Janne Kaijärvi, Editor in Chief of Sanoma Kaupunkilehdet.

Bluegiga WT11 Bluetooth® Module is being used in the e-reader, Bluegiga also offered technical consultation and support throughout the project.

Chinese markets

After the pilot project in Vantaa, the reading device will be piloted in Shanghai and Fengjyang, China at the end of 2011. People’s Daily, China’s biggest newspaper, will provide content for the new project. The e-reader pilot is part of a larger Sino-Finnish project to develop new data transfer channels that combine e-paper and digital TV. Finnish companies involved in the development project include DNA, Cubio, Bluegiga Technologies, Etnoteam Finland, Sanoma, Provoke and Yoka Consulting.

A new company has also been established in Finland to support the commercialization of the reading device and related technologies. The company will license the content channel and develop a commercial version of the reading device. “Our Chinese partners play a key role here, as this partnership will allow us to achieve potentially significant volumes in China after the pilot project,” says Tiina Vuorio, Head of China cooperation at Metropolia’s Electria unit. “With increased product development and volumes, we aim to deliver a competitive cost structure for the new media channel. No longer forced to deal with print and distribution costs, publishing houses will have an excellent incentive to offer the reading device at low price or for free,” adds Vuorio.

Bluegiga Meets at Slush Conference a Finnish Startup Planning to Create a Hydration Coach Solution with BLE112 Bluetooth Smart Module

22.11.2012

From left, Panu Keski-Pukkila, Tappi Honkavaara, Heikki Säteri with their prototype and iPhone

Cactus is a young startup company from Finnish Aalto University. Panu Keski-Pukkila and his four friends noticed that people are so busy today that they don’t have time to drink the amount of water they need. Within athletes and coffee-drinking city dwellers they found a niche market for a smart bottle that reminds you to drink water via a smart phone application. They called the new prototype Cactus Smart Hydration.

The objective is to create a hydration coach solution that guides people for the optimal hydration based on your sex, age, weight, height and physical activity. The supporting objective is to influence environmental issues and bring awareness on the consequences drinking bottled water has for the global environment. Previously, Cactus’s young talents had been involved in a school project to research the impact on plastic waste the bottled water drinkers create every year that partly influenced their project idea.

The smart bottle sends water consumption data to your cell phone via Bluetooth wireless technology. Based on the data, the application shows you a visual representation of how much water you should drink in order to reach your recommended daily hydration goal.

Cactus decided to choose Bluegiga’s BLE112 Bluetooth 4.0 Module, because it consumes less energy, it is easy to use and its small size. In addition, they had previous experience in using Bluetooth 2.0. The benefit of Bluegiga BLE112 Bluetooth Smart Module is also that you can program software in it by yourself.

“We chose Bluegiga’s BLE112 Module for our prototype, because Bluegiga is a local well-established company with high quality products and agreed to help us with our prototype.” Panu Keski-Pukkila, Founder, Cactus.
